Why do pastors’ children not follow the path of the Lord? Could it be a coincidence? Eli raised worthless children who did not know the lord which later led to their death and the death of Eli. Moses children do not serve the lord. Could it be a coincidence? David produced Amnon the rapist. Could it be a coincidence? Ezekiel was not bothered about his future, forgetting that children are the extension of our lives. Could it be a coincidence?
We cannot deny the fact that Pastors are saddled with so many responsibilities, from nurturing and feeding church members spiritually, caring for the sick, evangelising, caring for the elderly, amongst others. Inasmuch as we are bound to fulfil all these tasks, we should not neglect our first church, which is our home.
The greatest mission field is not the northern part of Nigeria, nor the dark continent of Africa, as important as this may sound. The greatest mission field is the heart of our children. Our children are our greatest challenge and our greatest mission field; what value is preaching around the world if your children are doing otherwise? We expect schools, churches, and organisations to convey values to them, thinking we are working for God, but are undeniably absent from children to teach, train and nurture them in the way of the lord. We automatically assume God will train them for us since we are serving him, forgetting the intentional part of parenting, which is reflected in the church’s children’s ministry.
Our children are our future, and the church needs a deliberate attempt to meet the needs of the 21st-century children so that we can have rest in the future.
The unavailable pastors, or absentee pastors, are prone to raising children with so many social problems, including poverty, crime, teen pregnancy, child abuse, alcohol, and they are likely to drop out of school.
Inasmuch as money, fame and positions are good, there is the need is need to consciously parent our children by setting aside reasonable time with them out of all our tight schedules so we can understand their physical, spiritual, academics and emotional needs because their life will not be automatically void of all these because they are pastors’ children
We are to raise role models that we can be confident will not tarnish the image of God but continue to advance the kingdom of God.
