…trust is both a compliment and a responsibility and allows the recipient a wide referee of latitude

(Excerpt from Gamaliel Onosode: A biography)

Recently, I immersed myself in the biography of the late Mr. Gamaliel Onosode, skillfully penned by Professor A.E. Eruvbetine, Udu Yakubu, and Harry Olufunwa. The quote above about trust, extracted from this insightful biography, resonated deeply with me.

The quote serves as a poignant reminder, particularly in the realm of Public Relations, where the business we conduct hinges on the trust we cultivate within our organizations and with our clients.

Trust, akin to a rare gem, is a testament to the character and reliability of the individual or entity in question. It is a compliment bestowed upon those deemed worthy—an acknowledgment of integrity, competence, and dependability. In personal relationships, professional collaborations, or business transactions, trust acts as the cornerstone upon which meaningful connections are built.

However, with this compliment comes an immense responsibility—a duty to uphold the expectations set by the bestowment of trust. Those who earn the trust of others find themselves in a privileged position, with the ability to shape narratives, guide decisions, and influence outcomes. This privilege demands a heightened sense of accountability and a commitment to maintaining the standards that inspired trust in the first place.

The latitude granted to those held in trust is not a license for complacency but an invitation to excel. It acknowledges that the trusted party has demonstrated qualities and capabilities that merit reliance. Individuals and organizations alike must continually strive for excellence, evolve, adapt, and consistently meet or exceed the expectations set by their stakeholders.

Transparency, clear communication, and ethical conduct form the pillars of maintaining trust. Regularly affirming one’s commitment to these principles reinforces the foundation upon which trust is built. In an era where information flows rapidly, and reputations can be shaped in an instant, the onus lies on the trusted to safeguard and cultivate the trust bestowed upon them.

Recognizing the reciprocal nature of trust is crucial. Just as it is earned, trust can be fragile, requiring consistent effort to nurture and protect. A breach of trust can erode relationships, tarnish reputations, and result in consequences that resonate far beyond the initial transgression.

Acknowledging the honour embedded in being trusted should propel individuals and organizations to approach their roles with a heightened sense of duty and dedication. By doing so, they not only preserve the compliment but also contribute to the cultivation of a culture where trust is valued, protected, and continually reinforced.

No matter the product or service offered to stakeholders, safeguarding their trust is paramount. Brands that fail to build trust when they are in crisis, they do not have clients to vouch for them. Clients must recognize the importance of trust in their dealings with agencies, understanding that trust is the cornerstone of a successful partnership.

In the realm of Public Relations, what we ultimately sell is trust. Our products or services are secondary. Once trust wanes, the business is on a journey to oblivion.

Wishing you a fulfilling week ahead!
