“Quality is the key Selling point of products; bad products cannot be sold twice.”
-Excerpt from the Biography of Gamaliel Onosode
The above quote may seem straightforward, even obvious, but it is a clarion call to critically examine whether our brands meet the expectations of various stakeholders. Are we delivering the quality that customers, shareholders, and partners expect and deserve?
In recent times, brands have struggled to break through the noise clutter to attract the consumer or client’s attention. Quality remains the unsung hero. It is the silent salesperson, the quiet influencer, and the subtle force that can make or break a product’s success.
Many companies got it right at the inception, but over time, they compromised on quality, and they got a negative review or were fished-out by a regulatory agency. When this degenerates into a full-fledged issue or crisis, they usually find it difficult to stage a comeback. This is an illustration of what has happened to many companies across the globe.
A product of high quality is more than just a physical entity; it’s a promise fulfilled. It’s the assurance of reliability, durability, and performance. When a product consistently delivers on its promises, it becomes a beacon, drawing in customers and fostering loyalty.
Conversely, a product that lacks quality is like a broken promise; it not only disappoints but also jeopardises the brand’s reputation. Dissatisfied clients often voice their displeasure on social media, review platforms, and through word of mouth, creating a ripple effect that can deter potential buyers. The saying, “bad products cannot be sold twice,” holds true, as poor quality drives customers and clients away, often for good.
In business, where words are plenty, actions — or more specifically, results — speak louder. Quality is the silent spokesperson of any product, service, or brand. It communicates trust, reliability, and value without a single word. While public relations activities, marketing campaigns and advertisements can draw attention to the product and brand, it is the quality of what’s offered that builds lasting relationships with customers.
Some of the reasons why brands must ensure that their quality remains intact include-
Building Trust Through Performance: A high-quality product doesn’t need flashy marketing to prove its worth. It silently earns trust by delivering on its promises. When customers find a product reliable, durable, and effective, they become loyal advocates, often recommending it to others through word of mouth.
Reputation is Built on Quality: Brands may spend millions of naira on building their image, but a single low-quality product can undo years of hard work. Quality serves as the backbone of a brand’s reputation. It signals that the company cares about its customers’ or clients’ needs and is committed to excellence.
The Cost of Poor Quality: While it might be tempting to cut corners, the cost of poor quality often outweighs any short-term savings. Bad products lead to returns, replacements, and negative reviews, tarnishing the brand’s image. On the other hand, a product that delivers value saves businesses from these hidden costs while fostering customer loyalty.
Client Experience as a Narrative: Every product or service tells a story. High-quality products narrate tales of precision, care, and dedication, while inferior ones lead to boycotts. Quality ensures every client interaction becomes a positive chapter in the brand’s narrative.
It is fundamental to ensure these ideals are integrated into everything you do to continually attract customers and clients to your brand, products, and services.
Prioritise Excellence: A company that prioritises excellence will reflect in a well-designed product that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. High-quality materials that ensure durability and performance should also be used at the production stage. Businesses must also establish rigorous quality control processes to ensure that every product delivered meets the highest standards. A commitment to excellence at every stage of production is non-negotiable.
Continuous Feedback: Quality begins with understanding the client’s expectations. Incorporating feedback into product design and improvement ensures that offerings remain relevant and valuable.
Invest in Continuous Improvement: Market demands and technologies evolve rapidly. Companies that embrace innovation and continuous improvement stay ahead of the curve, ensuring their products remain competitive. Precision and attention to detail are essential for superior quality and thorough testing to identify and eliminate defects.
Empower Your Team: Employees play a critical role in maintaining quality. Providing them with the proper training, tools, and motivation ensures they contribute to upholding the brand’s standards.
Quality is the unseen advocate that builds trust, loyalty, and long-term success. It eliminates the need for constant explanations or apologies, allowing the product to sell itself. A high-quality offering speaks silently but effectively, ensuring that customers or clients come back not just once but time and time again.
In business, the loudest voice isn’t always the most impactful — the quiet assurance of quality resonates. Let your brand’s silent spokesperson be quality. A product’s reputation is its most valuable asset. It will do the talking, and watch as it drives your growth, reputation, and customer or client loyalty to new heights.
Quality is the cornerstone of a successful product. By prioritising quality, businesses can build strong brands, foster customer loyalty, and achieve long-term success.
